I am an ultracyclist, which is vaguely defined as a cyclist who races or rides distances of longer than a century. I began participating in double century rides in 2016. In 2017, I entered my first 24 hour time trial and qualified for solo Race Across AMerica (RAAM), and in 2018 broke the course record at the 24 hour World Time Trial Championships with a ride of 456 miles. In June 2019, I won the solo division of Race Across the West from Oceanside, CA to Durango, CO. My goal was originally to finish Race Across America solo in 2020, but the race was canceled due to the COVID pandemic.

After spending the better part of two years building towards a race that didn’t happen, I spent 2021 recovering and tending to some injuries and other issues. I am now back to start the rebuilding process, beginning with a return to Race Across the West in June 2022 and hopes to ultimately achieve my goal of finishing solo RAAM in 2023.

“It’s Fine”

I am often asked about the origin of the “smiley face” (even though it’s not smiling) that appears on my T-shirts and jersey along with the statement “It’s Fine”. It started a couple of years ago as an inside joke with some friends. When we were about to do something potentially stupid and question whether it was a good idea, we’d just say “It’s fine”. If we weren’t feeling fantastic, but knew things could be a lot worse, we’d say “It’s fine” (kind of the equivalent of “but did you die?”). Eventually, we decided we should have an emoji to use in texts and social media to represent “it’s fine”, and the neutral emoji just seemed to fit perfectly. It caught on and became a great slogan to go along with my ultracycling endeavors.
